A Contributors Applauded
for Joining the Hunger-Relief Efforts
Amidst the fanfare of
Mountaineer Food Bank’s Open House and Volunteer Celebration there
were a few moments of applause to acknowledge the contributions of
some of their corporate partners. As the largest food bank in
the state of West Virginia, Mountaineer Food Bank and its
hunger-relief network serve more than 260,000 people every
month. Like most
non-profits they are dependent on financial support from
individuals, corporate donors and private foundations to maintain
their daily operations.
“The corporate sponsors we
recognize today support Mountaineer Food Bank because they are good
stewards of their relationships with their shoppers in West
Virginia,” stated Bryan Minor, President of the food bank. “As
a result of their partnership with the Food Bank, thousands of our
hungry neighbors will be fed. Our corporate partners’ quiet
philanthropy provides a return on investment measured in growing
children, changing lives and increased hope. We are most grateful
for their support.”
In 1992 the
Department of Natural Resources partnered with Mountaineer Food Bank
to start the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. Since that time 2,397,291
servings of ground venison have been distributed throughout the
state. DNR Director
Frank Jezioro accepted a special plaque in honor of their
contributions. Mr.
Jezioro said “I take great pride in our partnership with the food
bank which provides a high protein source of meat to families in
West Virginia.”
The Kroger Company
has always been a contributor to the food bank and its member
feeding programs throughout the state. In March, Kroger and ConAgra
launched the two week campaign, “Families Feeding Families.” Mike Grubb, the local store
manager was pleased to receive a plaque as a token of thanks. Starting on May
24th Kroger’s will be providing their customers with year
round opportunities to donate to Mountaineer Food Bank.
Beverly Walter, Vice
President of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation received a
special plaque to commemorate their ongoing support of the Food
Bank. Ms. Walter shared
with the audience a little bit about the history of the Benedum
Foundation and Mrs. Sarah Benedum, the mother of Claude for whom the
foundations is named.
During her lifetime she was one of the 100 wealthiest people
in the United States.
Yet she never took her place in life for granted. She was a “spirited leader
who volunteered regularly at food banks and Goodwill.” The Benedum Foundation has
been a supporter of the food bank since the beginning, providing
five different grants totaling over $850,000.
Mountaineer
Food Bank, a certified member of America’s Second Harvest – The
Nation’s Food Bank Network, serves more than 460 feeding programs in
48 counties of West Virginia.
The food that passes through their doors touches the lives of
more than 260,000 people every month. They are always looking for
new volunteers for both short term and longer commitments. For more information contact
