Shania Sells The Shirt Off Her Back To Fight Hunger In West Virginia

Would you give the shirt off your back to help feed hungry West Virginians?   Country music star Shania Twain is doing just that before her May 13th concert at the Charleston Civic Center.   WQBE, 97.1 FM in Charleston, in conjunction with Mountaineer Food Bank, an America’s Second Harvest Affiliate, is auctioning off two front row tickets and the shirt she will wear onstage during her last song to the highest bidder.  All proceeds of the auction will benefit Mountaineer Food Bank.  This online auction ends May 11, 2004 at 5 PM.  For more information about the auction visit www.mountaineerfoodbank.com and click on the link for “Shania’s Shirt”.

Since July 2003, Shania has raised more than $230,000 through her concerts for America’s Second Harvest affiliates and their Kids Café programs.  “I wish I had a place like that to go when I was young.  My parents were very decent hardworking people who just couldn’t always make ends meet.  There were lots of times my family didn’t have food,” Shania remembers.  To help raise awareness and funds to fight hunger throughout the United States she has partnered with America’s Second Harvest and conducts both an auction and a raffle at each of her concerts.  Representatives of Mountaineer Food Bank will also be selling raffle tickets at the concert for $1.00.  The winner of the raffle will get to go on stage with Shania Twain.

Mountaineer Food Bank is based in Gassaway and serves 48 of the 55 counties in West Virginia.  Every month 260,000 people are served through 438 feeding programs.  More than 5.6 million pounds of food, clothing and personal care items pass through their doors each year.  The Food Bank is a non-profit organization that depends on volunteers, donations from individuals, grants and cost-sharing programs to maintain its daily operations.  If you have any questions please call Mountaineer Food Bank at 304 364-5518 or visit their website at www.mountaineerfoodbank.com
