West Virginia Communities Make a DifferenceNeighbor Helping Neighbor
When it comes to
people working together to help their neighbors, West Virginians
know how to get it done.
Mountaineer Food Bank, based in Gassaway, announced this week
the final totals for the pounds distributed in 2004. With the help of more than
450 feeding programs in 48 counties, 5.7 million pounds of
food and personal care items were distributed to struggling West
Virginians. The
products Mountaineer Food Bank acquires and distributes include
donations from local manufacturers, merchants, distributors and
growers as well as through local fundraising initiatives like canned
food drives, hoe-downs for the hungry and cash contributions. These items, distributed
within the community by local feeding programs, represent a lifeline
of support for hungry individuals.
Once a month
Mountaineer Food Bank brings a truck full of items into 47 counties,
delivering an assortment of fresh produce, frozen products, dry food
items, and USDA commodities, specifically chosen by representatives
of the feeding program to meet their client’s needs. (Feeding Programs can also
schedule a pick up from the warehouse at any time.) These products
are then distributed to needy individuals and families in the
area. Through the hard
work and dedication of the feeding programs and their countless
volunteers, help is always available for people who are struggling
to make ends meet.
Mountaineer Food
Bank, a member of America’s Second Harvest, the Nation’s Food Bank
Network, serves 48 counties in West Virginia. They are the largest Food
Bank in the state of West Virginia providing food and personal care
items to more than 450 feeding programs that in turn help 260,000
people every month.
Mountaineer Food Bank is a non-profit organization that
financially depends on grants, cost sharing and donations from
individuals to maintain daily operations. Mercer County, Harrison,
Raleigh, Braxton and Ohio all finished in the top five of
Mountaineer Food Bank’s list for pounds received and
distributed.
